All you need to know about vanity sizing

May, 1 2023

vanity sizeing

As someone who has been in the fashion industry for over 20 years, I have seen many trends come and go. But one issue that always seems to come up is vanity sizing. Have you ever bought a garment that claims to be your size, only to find that it doesn’t fit quite right? Well, that could be due to vanity sizing.

Vanity sizing is a sneaky trick that clothing designers use to make us feel good about ourselves. Essentially, it involves making clothing sizes larger than they actually are. For example, a size 6 might actually be an 8, or a size 4 might actually be a 2. The goal is to make customers feel good about themselves by fitting into a smaller size, which can lead to increased sales.

However, this practice can be frustrating for shoppers, as it makes it difficult to know what size to buy. To make matters worse, sizing can vary from brand to brand, so you might be a size 4 in one brand and a size 10 in another. It’s no wonder that so many women feel insecure about their size!

But here’s the thing - you should never feel bad about your size. Clothing sizes are not an accurate representation of your worth or your body. What’s important is finding clothes that fit you well and make you feel confident and comfortable. And when it comes to online shopping, don’t be afraid to refer to size charts and use a tape measure to ensure a proper fit.

One interesting thing to note is that designer fashions are often sized smaller than mass market clothes. This is because designer clothing is typically tailored to fit a specific body type, whereas mass-market clothes are designed to fit a wider range of shapes and sizes. So if you’re shopping for designer clothes, you might want to consider sizing up.

At the end of the day, vanity sizing might be a clever marketing tactic, but it’s not worth getting hung up on. Wear what makes you feel good and forget about the numbers on the label. And remember, the buck stops with the manufacturer - retailers might push for sizing changes, but ultimately it’s up to the manufacturer to decide. So let’s demand more transparency and consistency in sizing, and put the focus back on style and self-confidence.
