Dress for success guide for job interview outfits

How to dress for a Work interview

Hello gorgeous go-getters!

You've polished your resume, practiced your answers, and researched the company inside out. Now, let's tackle the final piece of the puzzle: what to wear. That first visual impression is powerful, and we want yours to say "I'm capable, confident, and the perfect fit for this role."

Here’s my stylist-approved breakdown for acing your interview attire:

  1. The Golden Rule: Research the Company Culture!
  2. This is non-negotiable. Are you interviewing at a traditional law firm, a cutting-edge tech startup, or a creative agency?

    • Formal/Corporate (Law, Finance, Traditional Companies): Lean conservative. A well-fitting pantsuit or skirt suit in navy, black, or charcoal grey is your safest bet. Pair it with a simple blouse or shell top.
    • pant suit in navy blue and neutral accessories

    • Business Casual (Tech, Marketing, Many Modern Offices): You have more flexibility. Think tailored trousers or a knee-length skirt paired with a smart blouse or fine-gauge knit sweater. A well-fitting blazer is always a great addition to elevate the look. A professional sheath dress (ensure it's not too tight or short) is also a strong option.
    • green skirt and sweater business casual

all black with a gray jacket

less formal pencil skirt blouse and camel blazer

      SHOP THE LOOK

    • Casual/Creative (Startups, Arts, Some Agencies): "Casual" for an interview still means polished. Think dark-wash, well-fitting trousers (perhaps chinos or even immaculate, dark, non-distressed jeans if you know the environment is very casual – but tread carefully!), a smart top, and maybe a stylish, less formal blazer or cardigan. Avoid anything sloppy.
    • black pants white white cardigan and trench coat

      SHOP THE LOOK

knee length gray dress and blzaer

      SHOP THE LOOK

all black with a gray jacket

When in doubt, always err on the side of slightly more formal. It's better to be a little overdressed than underdressed.

  3. Key Pieces & Fit:
    • Suits: If opting for a suit, ensure it fits impeccably. Pay attention to shoulder seams, sleeve length (should hit the wrist bone), and trouser/skirt length. Tailoring is your best friend!
    • Separates: Blazers should fit well through the shoulders. Trousers shouldn't be too tight or too baggy. Skirts should ideally be knee-length or just below.
    • Tops: Choose blouses, shells, or fine knits in solid colours or subtle patterns. Ensure necklines are modest (no deep V-necks or scoop necks) and fabrics aren't sheer.
    • Dresses: Sheath dresses are often a great choice. Ensure the fit is professional (not body-con) and the length is appropriate. You can layer a blazer over it.

  4. Colour Palette Power:
  5. Stick to classic, neutral colours for your main pieces:

    • Navy
    • Black
    • Grey (Charcoal, Medium Grey)
    • Beige/Camel

You can introduce a touch of colour with your blouse (think soft blues, muted greens, burgundy, blush) but avoid overly bright or distracting colours and busy patterns. Solids are generally safest.

  6. Footwear Fundamentals:
    • Choose: Closed-toe shoes are a must. Polished pumps (modest heel height – think 1-3 inches), elegant flats, or classic loafers are all excellent choices. Ensure they are comfortable enough to walk in confidently.
    • Colours: Black, navy, nude, or grey are safe bets.
    • Condition: Make sure they are clean, scuff-free, and well-maintained.

  7. Accessorize Wisely:
  8. Less is absolutely more for interviews.

    • Jewelry: Opt for simple, classic pieces. Stud earrings, a delicate necklace, a professional watch. Avoid noisy bangles or statement pieces that could be distracting.
    • Bag: Choose a structured tote or handbag large enough to hold your essentials (resume copies, notepad, pen) but not overly bulky. Leather or quality faux leather in a neutral colour works best.
    • Belts: If wearing one, ensure it's simple and matches your shoes or bag.

  9. Grooming Matters:
    • Hair: Neat and tidy. Pulled back off your face (ponytail, bun) or styled smoothly if worn down.
    • Makeup: Natural and polished. Aim for an enhanced version of your everyday look. Avoid heavy foundation, bright eyeshadow, or bold lipstick.
    • Nails: Clean and manicured. Neutral polish (nude, pale pink, clear) or buffed natural nails are best. Avoid chipped polish or overly long/elaborate nails.
    • Perfume: Go very light or skip it altogether. Some people are sensitive to scents.

  10. The Little Details (That Make a Big Difference):
    • Immaculate Condition: Everything must be clean, pressed, and free of wrinkles, stains, rips, pet hair, or missing buttons.
    • Undergarments: Ensure they are neutral and don't show through your clothing. Check bra strap visibility.

  11. What Not to Wear (Generally):
    • Anything too tight, too short, or too revealing (low necklines, sheer fabrics).
    • Jeans (unless you are absolutely certain it's appropriate and they are dark, clean, and tailored).
    • Leggings as pants.
    • T-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies.
    • Athletic wear or sneakers.
    • Open-toed shoes, stilettos, overly casual sandals.
    • Anything wrinkled, stained, or damaged
    • Distracting patterns or large logos.
    • Too much perfume or heavy makeup.
    • Noisy or overly flashy jewelry.

Bonus Tip: Virtual Interviews

Even if interviewing online, dress professionally from the waist up at least (though I recommend the whole outfit to get in the right mindset!). Solid colours often look better on camera than busy patterns. Check your background and lighting!

Final Thoughts:

Your interview outfit is part of your personal brand for the day. Choose pieces that make you feel comfortable, confident, and capable. When you feel good, you project confidence, and that's exactly what interviewers want to see.

Now go out there and show them what you've got!
